Abstract

In this article the ornithological universe in Guatuso, a Chibchan language spoken in the Northeast region of Costa Rica, is analyzed. The way birds are classified within Guatuso culture is characterized, following the model offered by Berlin (1992) and employing the catalogue developed by Stiles and Skuth (1995), as well as the information provided by a native speaker of Guatuso. I conclude that the classification done by the Guatusos meets most of the criteria included in Berlin’s model.
