Abstract

This article presents a qualitative characterization of the sociolinguistic situation of the Malecus, a Chibchan people settled in Guatuso, Costa Rica. The displacement process of Malecu and the extension of Malecu-Spanish bilingualism (at a first stage) and monolingualism in Spanish (at a second stage) are particularly described. Also, Malecu’s functional domains with some vitality in the present are analyzed, and its linguistic situation is characterized by age group and community.
