Abstract

This contribution is dedicated to the memory of Adolfo Constenla. It includes historical data about the ethnic group called Chichimeca Jonaz and a brief sketch of the language they still speak. The present article is based on a more detailed forthcoming one, the result of long years of fieldwork. The group lived in the Sierra Gorda in the territory around present-day Tolimán, Querétaro. The survivors of a massacre perpetrated by Coronel Escandón's soldiers fled to San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato. Their language is Otopamean. It is still spoken by bilinguals and is in danger of extinction.
