Abstract

The Ette of northern Colombia, also known as Chimila, possesses a body of myths about humans adopted by animals and their subsequent adventures. These are the richest and longest of all their stories, being remarkable for the diversity of characters, situations and scenarios of their plots. A myth of this genre is introduced, transcribed, translated and analyzed in the following paper. It tells the story of a girl kidnapped by monkeys, who undertakes an arduous journey to come back home and find her human parents. While the myth is open to several interpretations, its astronomic meaning is emphasized. In that way the article aims to contribute to the studies of the oral literature of the Ette, one of the least known among the chibcha-speaking groups.
