Abstract

This paper deals with the discursive fabric of the Bribri oral tradition, in which ritual chant is structurant. This specialized linguistic variety was described by Constenla Umaña (1990). In the analysis, the Bakhtinian notion of “dialogue of genres” is applied and an intepretetion of the bribri oral tradition from the concept of contextualization as proposed by Duranti & Goodwin (1992) and Bauman (1992) is intended.
