Abstract

Indigenous groups have bestowed meanings upon animals throughout their history. Their representations appear in artifacts made of stone, jade, clay, gold and wood. The narratives of different indigenous groups are examined in order to establish the range of symbols and meanings. This initial approach toward possible interpretations includes the examination of artifacts in the context of Central Valley burial site and of the biological characteristics evidenced in these representations.
