Abstract

We explore the historical evolution of modal notions in Aristotle, Leibniz and recent philosophy of science. Technological possibilities seem endless today, but they are based on the scientific knowledge of limits and impossibilities. The importance of modal notions in Leibniz seems to anticipate later developments in logic, science and technology.
